Vane Mist Eliminators
High-capacity droplet separation for industrial gas streams
Knitwire supplies vane mist eliminators designed to remove entrained liquid droplets from gas streams in demanding industrial process applications.
Also known as vane demisters, vane packs or chevron mist eliminators, these systems provide an effective solution where higher gas velocities and liquid loading may make a vane-type separator more appropriate than a conventional wire mesh demister.
Vane mist eliminators can be supplied in configurations designed to suit individual process and installation requirements.

How Vane Mist Eliminators Work
Vane mist eliminators consist of a series of specially shaped plates arranged to create a complex, zig-zagging pathway through the separator.
As the gas stream passes through the vane pack, its direction is repeatedly changed. Liquid droplets carried within the gas have greater inertia and are unable to follow these rapid changes in direction, causing them to impact against the vane surfaces.
The captured droplets coalesce to form larger droplets, which can then drain away from the gas stream.
Hooks and drainage channels can also be incorporated into the vane profile to improve liquid capture and help reduce the potential for collected droplets to become re-entrained.
High-Capacity Mist Elimination
Vane mist eliminators are particularly suited to applications involving higher gas velocities or greater liquid loading.
Under suitable operating conditions, vane systems are typically used to separate larger droplets, often in the region of 10–30 microns. However, separation efficiency and the minimum droplet size that can be effectively removed depend upon numerous process conditions, including gas and liquid properties, operating pressure, temperature and gas velocity.
For this reason, mist eliminator selection should always take account of the individual process conditions rather than droplet size alone.
Vane & Wire Mesh Systems
Where greater separation efficiency is required, vane mist eliminators can be used in combination with knitted wire mesh.
A wire mesh mist eliminator can be incorporated as an agglomeration stage, encouraging smaller droplets to coalesce into larger droplets before they reach the vane separator.
Combining the two technologies can provide an effective solution where the operating conditions or required separation performance cannot be achieved by a single separation method.
Easy Inspection & Maintenance
Vane mist eliminators can be manufactured in multiple sections, allowing individual sections to be removed for inspection and cleaning when required.
This modular construction can make maintenance easier, particularly in larger process vessels and installations where access may be restricted.
Applications
Vane mist eliminators can be used across a wide range of process industries and gas-liquid separation applications, including:
- Oil and gas processing
- Petrochemical processing
- Chemical processing
- Gas scrubbers
- Separators and process vessels
- Evaporators
- Distillation systems
- Gas treatment systems
- Applications with high gas velocities or liquid loading
Selecting the Right Mist Eliminator
The most appropriate mist elimination technology depends on the characteristics of the gas and liquid, operating conditions, required separation efficiency and allowable pressure drop.
Knitwire offers both wire mesh demisters and vane mist eliminators, allowing different separation technologies to be considered according to the requirements of the application.
